Scottish Rum is the next big thing!
Scottish Rum is starting to rise to the top in the distilling industry in Scotland. In a country renowned for its distilling skills, predominantly in Scotch Whisky, Scottish Rum is the latest category to see a meteoric rise in sales. The change to consumer behaviour is still fairly new- younger groups seeking out local, artisanal producers with a craft approach probably started with the craft brewing movement. Previously, real ale would have had you laughed out of the pub...unless you had a beard and a collection of something odd. Festivals and craft brewing appreciation alongside a fairly decent bump from the “foodie” sector led to craft beer being the leading category for many years.
Roll forward into the last 10 years and Gin was the new drink. Gin crazes are not a new thing in these islands but the craft gin movement seemed to offer something different. Endless botanical combinations with seemingly endless small-batch distilleries. But as the experimentation arguably went too far and consumer education caught up with the process of simply adding botanical ingredients to NGS (neutral grain spirit), the tide started to turn on Gin.
Now, Scottish Rum is discovering a renaissance. Craft distilleries are not huge in number yet but the upcoming Scottish Rum Festival is highlighting just a few of the established brands. Some are larger than others, all offer something a little different but all are Scottish producers. Jacobite Spirits is newer on the scene than most and Scottish Rum is at the heart of everything we do. Scottish Rum is on the Rise and with The 45 Scottish Spiced Rum leading the charge, we are already seeing consumers from around the world lighting up to it’s flavour profile. Rebellion is in the air- Rum is on the rise!
